PATTERNS OF ESSENTIAL CARE - A lifestyle based on principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine
How does acupuncture work?
Takeda, K., Okumura, K. (2004). CAM and NK cells. Evidence Based Complementary Alternative Medicine;1(1):17-27. Retrieved from http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/

Natural killer (NK) cells (direct cytotoxic lymphocytes - white blood cells) play a critical role in immune surveillance. Acupuncture is thought to enhance this role through NK cell activation and regulation. The mechanisms include augmentation of cytotoxic molecules in NK cells, and / or through the up-regulation of NK cell receptor activation. The other possibility is through the down-regulation of inhibitory NK cell receptors.

The National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAM) explanation of how acupuncture works: ...through regulating the nervous system, thus aiding the activity of pain killing bio-chemicals such as endorphins and immune system cells at specific sites in the body

Additionally, other studies have shown that acupuncture may alter brain chemistry by changing the release of neurotransmitters and neuro-hormones thus affecting the parts of the central nervous system related to sensation and involuntary body functions, such as immune reactions and processes that regulate a person’s blood pressure, blood flow, and body temperature.

The physiologic mechanisms found in this study included: Neurochemical gate theory, autonomic regulation, activation of the descending anti-nociceptive pathway to release endogenous opioids (beta-endorphins, enkephalins, dynorphins, serotonin) to deactivate the ascending nociceptive pain pathway.

None of the studies reviewed proposed that the neurochemical effects are dependent on point selection or stimulation methods. This suggests that acupuncture simply stimulates self-regulatory processes, which may explain acupuncture’s reported benefits in so many disparate pathologic conditions.
